Often we approach Bible study and ask ourselves, “What’s in it for me?” We’re intimidated by the word study. It brings back memories of cramming for math exams and less than par grades. However, that’s not the case when it comes to reading your Bible. It’s so much more than that. In fact, it’s far more rewarding than we can ever imagine.
One benefit, and purpose, of studying the Scriptures is to know God and His character. We learn from the start that He is our Provider and Sustainer. Further on we might see His mercy, forgiveness, and the desire for restoration. We see His kindness and redemption in the gospels and observe His wrath towards those who disobey. Whatever the case may be, we can be sure that we will know God more intimately when we take careful time to discover His character and nature.
We also learn God’s will for our lives. The Bible is full of purpose and opportunity if we will only open its pages. From the shining example of faith through Abraham to the practicality of the book of James, we are guaranteed to come across something that we can apply every day, and eventually find what it is that God wants to do through us. But we can’t know what His will is unless we sit down and patiently listen to His Word.
The Bible also provides wisdom, comfort, and encouragement every time we need it. For every problem we face, God’s Word has a solution for it. Diligent study will prove this to be true. The Psalmist expresses his frustrations that we often deal with daily. The writer of Proverbs voices his thoughts on certain matters of the heart. Jesus Himself offers the comfort that only He can give, and He promises the coming of the Spirit who guides us.
It would be wise of us to consider these things as we open our Bibles. The very pages of Scripture are God-breathed and inspired by the Holy Spirit. They are the mind and thoughts of God. It is up to us to take advantage of what He has given us and live by those words daily.
