Lessons From The Resurrection

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

Luke 24:1-6

You’re probably thinking, what else could you possibly learn from the account of the resurrection? Isn’t it enough to simply know that Jesus is alive? Well, while that’s true, there’s so much more that we can pick up from this passage in Luke. Let’s dive in!

~ ~ ~

The first thing that I picked up while studying this passage was who was involved. It says that “they” and “certain others with them” were there. The “they” mentioned are also found in the other three gospels, and they are found to be family and close friends of Jesus. If you’d like to learn more about who these folks were, you can study for yourself in:

Matthew 28:1

Mark 16:1

John 20:1

Verses 2-3 emphasize something very peculiar about these people; they were ORDINARY. Yet God saw fit for those people to find the empty tomb. This is TWICE in the gospels (specifically Luke) that ordinary people had the chance to experience first-hand a central part of Christ’s ministry. The first time was in Luke 2, when the shepherds were told of the humble birth of our Lord Jesus.

The angels at the tomb also had “glad tidings”. Just as the angels of the Christmas story announced the arrival of Christ, these too announced the announced the arrival of the risen Lord. What can we learn from this if we paralleled the Luke 2 account with the Resurrection?

- God does not favor status. He has a plan for each of us, even the most ordinary of people. The disciples later came to be leading figures in the birth of the Church.

- They had good news; Jesus is here and He is alive!

- The Resurrection opened a door for ordinary people to be a part of the family of God. Without the Resurrection, the salvation story is incomplete.

If you’ve never experienced the power of the Resurrection in your own life, I invite you to take a moment and evaluate yourself in light of what Jesus has done for you. I challenge you to make sure that you are in right standing with God.
