KEY VERSE – Psalm 46:10
Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
to guide the future as He has the past
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below
What a marvelous thought to know that God took it upon Himself to love us, sinners though we may be. He guides us, cheers us, protects us, loves us and calls us His own.
I wonder how many times we’ve lost all confidence in those we once trusted here on earth. I wonder how many times we’ve been let down, disappointed, and hurt by those we called friends. Let me assure you today, dearest friend, that Jesus will never, ever do that to you. The writer of this hymn is so poetic in the way that she calls on us to simply trust, simply believe. She begs us to allow nothing to shake our confidence in the only Only one who can calm the storms in our lives.
The verse ends with a powerful note (no pun intended...maybe). It tells us, yet again, to still our souls. Why? Because the waves and winds, whether natural or spiritual, that brew in our lives are still under the subjection of Almighty God. They still have to obey Him when He cries out, “Be still!”
Pray:
Father God, help us to learn to trust You. You are our confidence, and you are our hope. Thank You that You will never let us down. Lord, we ask You to faithfully calm our storms and give us victory over the things that bring us fear. Quell our sorrows and replace them with joy. Rid us of sinful thoughts and sinful pleasures, and replace them with the things that bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
