KEY VERSE – Psalm 46:10
Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
in every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
This hymn begins with a reminder from the age-old, but still relevant, from the psalmist to remember that God is still God. He wants us to quiet our hearts and meditate on who He is. Oh how much we need to simply be still. The hustle and bustle of life can be exhausting, but Jesus invites us to come to Him and rest. How much simpler would life be if we would only trust Him?
The writer of this beautiful hymn also gently nudges us to a deeper understanding that God is always with us. If God be for us, who can be against us? We may have enemies here on this side of eternity, but friend, what a wonderful thought it is to have a Friend above all friends sitting at the right hand of God interceding for us.
The next line says something quite profound. It begs of us to patiently endure the troubles and trials that life tends to throw our way. Christ says in the gospels that he who endures to the end shall be saved. Endurance builds character and patience. Endurance gives us a testimony and displays the power of God in our lives.
It gets a little deeper now. The writer implores us further to trust God. It should spur us to unwavering faith. How often do we go down to the altar and pray, saying we’d leave everything at the feet of Jesus, only to pick it right back up and burden ourselves throughout the week? It doesn’t have to be that way. We can trust the Lord to “order and provide”. Why? Because He is faithful. He is our Friend.
Let’s pray:
Sweet loving Father, how we thank You for the wonderful promise that You’d always be with us. We thank You that You have called us Your friends. We thank You and praise You that You’re a constant companion, no matter what comes our way. Oh God, forgive us for not trusting You. Help us and guide us to leave our troubles in Your hands. Help us to endure and give us strength to carry out Your will.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
